The Station of Being is a smart bus station in the Northern Swedish city of Umeå. The station contributes to the sustainability transition from a human experience point of view.
How can one's time at the bus station become a time to just be? From waisting time to being in the moment? Can we approach sustainable mobility behaviour from meaningful human experience? As opposed to from a technical perspective?
Passengers can lean into comfortable wooden pods that can turn and move. Inviting passengers to move and be in their body, while turning away from the wind. Creating social places to chat with friends, or seclude oneself for a quiet moment. Lighting in the ceiling creates a pleasant atmosphere. Adjusting the colours subtly to the next bus coming in. Ceiling mounted mirrors also help to perceive incoming busses from any position in the station. Suggesting passengers to get ready for quick boarding and lowering the amount of unnecessary stops. A soundscape plays as the bus arrives, reminding passengers of the character and history of its final destination. The hanging pods can be moved out of the way for a snowplough. Clearing the station in one sweep and removing the need for groundheating. Furthermore, the pods create an open space. Making it clear if there are people and where they are, contributing to the feeling of safety.
